1965 Raleigh RM9 Ultramatic Moped (faster version of the Raleigh RM6 Runabout)
History
Lovely little restoration project: To good to be broken down for spare parts. Most items to restore this are available from Classic Moped Spares.
This is from the personal collection of Moped Malc, and was with the mopeds in the great reveal by Super Motorcycle Enthusiast 'Henry Cole' on Channel 4 TV's Find It Fix It Flog It. Old Henry Cole did have his eye on this little beauty off screen as I remember.
Highlights
- A local bike from Somerset, I bought about 10 years ago, but not sure I will ever get to restore.
- The bike is in the Raleigh Cream and Green one of the popular colours
- The Engine turns by hand and appears to have good compression
- The model is the RM9. This had the variable engine which was slightly better than the RM6 runabout to give improved pulling power, important on those hills. The RM9 was also noted for front suspension and drum brakes front and rear.
- Mainly surface rust so lots of choice on what level of restoration you want to do. Good restored ones can fetch £1000+
- Most parts are with the bike or can be obtained. Nice to see the original tough metal chain guard covers on the bike.
- The number plate I have in a box somewhere, but cannot find. It probably is because the letters were falling off. I do know the registration number, but it is not on the DVLA system so will need applying for, which can be done through the clubs.
Also please note:-
- Requires a centre stand, though you could fit a side stand. Quite common for the stands to break or rust
- Headlight Lens missing which was also a common fault as they fell out
Summary
- Good little project for someone with a bit of time on their hands. Also quite desirable so a project that should be rewarding in more ways that one.
- Price is for collection only and does not include delivery
