The seal in a Mobylette or Raleigh Crankcase is fitted with the flat side inwards and the lip facing outwards.

Aplins had a reuptation for selling high quality products. Whilst slightly more expensive than the budget seals more commonly fitted they are less likely to cause a problem due to having no internal spring.

Fitting

These are fitted with the flat side inwards and the lip pointing towards the clutch or magneto as appropriate.

Background

These were tested and introduced by Aplins Motorcycles who were the uk market leading supplier for 60 years in Mobylette and Raleigh Moped parts. These were a better alternative to the standard oil seals which have a spring inside. The spring type often skilled and unskilled mechanics alike struggled to fit and even Aplins said the originals were sometimes difficult to force into the crankcase. The original seals were fitted with the flat side inwards meaning that the open spring could pop out into the clutch or magento areas of the engine. During fitting any issues with the spring would not be visible, only poor fitting would be noticeable after trying to start the machine.

For 15 years these special type green seals were fitted to engines that Aplins worked on and also other retailers. The seals have been manufactured to withstand high pressures. The seals are also resistant to two stroke oil and fuel mix in the chamber, however not substances such as brake fluid or extreme force.

These are a “semi-dual” lip type seal which as the name suggests helps to prevent the ingress of dust/dirt into the primary lip area. (The original seals were only single lipped). Surfaces should be clean when fitting to ensure the seal is allowed to function as it should.

For 15 years these were a popular choice by professionals as a better alternative to the original standard seals as they were easy to fit and less likely to cause further problems.
